The convent church in Żukowo is the oldest historic ecclesiastic building in all Kashubia. The first mention of the founding of a Norbertine convent in Żukowo by Duke Mestwin dates back to the 13th century, while the present church is considered to date from the 14th century. The precious interior decoration of the church includes an early-16th-century altar from Antwerp, the 17th-century main altar with a painting by the famous artist Hermann Hahn from Gdansk, and two Baroque side altars. On the Southern wall you can see a painting depicting the massacre of the Żukowo nuns that happened in the year 1226. In another building of the convent, the former coach-house, there is the small Parish Musuem, which also holds many interesting exhibits. It has a collection of canonicals and ornamental robes as well as a collection of Kashubian embroidery. After all, Żukowo is the cradle of the age-old traditions of Kashubian embroidery. The girls? school run by the convent used to teach needlework, sowing, reading and writing, as well as embroidery, in a style known today as the Żukowo School of Kashubian embroidery. Embroidery was used to decorate mob caps and canonicals. In the vicinity of the former convent you can also visit several old mills on the river Radunia dating back to the 13th century ? founded by the Norbertine nuns of Żukowo. The mills have been many times remodelled over the centuries ? most recently in the 19th and 20th centuries ? but still are a sight worth visiting.
